As part of the consultation exercise, Kate Morley from Groundwork UK visited Denton West End Primary School to ask some of the children there for their ideas on how to make the park a nicer place.
This was done by creating a 7 foot tall idea tree! Kate took an outline of a tree and asked the children to make it bloom by drawing their ideas on to leaves and then sticking them on the tree. Kate described it as 'a wonderful afternoon, but very manic as all 30 children wanted to stick their leaves on the tree at the same time!'
Below are some of the ideas from the tree (worded exactly as the children did):
- stop people from smashing glass
- do not throw litter about
- put signs up to tell people not to throw litter
- to put more bins in the park for litter to go in
- add excitement to the park
- keep your dog under control
- clean up after your dog
- put a fun house in the park - it could include a tuck shop, ice cream counter, an inside play area for toddlers and much more
- no smoking
- no lighting fires
- please do not swing on the football posts
- make some dech chairs for older people
- make some bike ramps
- roller skate park
- have an ice cream van for children 50p-£1.00
- more trees
- more wildlife
- entertainment in the evening - it could be on a stage near the play area
- make a pond
- put more flowers in the park to make it nicer please
- more benches = more visitors
- make childrens play area bigger
- plant more flowers around the entrance to make it look cute!
- please put a workshop in a space so you have somewhere to go
